Rio Grande <<REE oh GRAND>> is one of the longest rivers in North America. It flows through the Southwestern United States. Early Spanish explorers gave the river its name. Rio Grande means “large river.” Mexicans call the river Rio Bravo, which means “bold river,” or Rio Bravo del Norte, which means “bold river of the north.”
The Rio Grande begins in the Rocky Mountains in Colorado. It crosses into New Mexico, flows through the center of that state, and then flows into Texas. There the Rio Grande forms part of the border between the United States and Mexico.
