Pacific Ocean

Pacific OceanThe Pacific Ocean is the largest body of water in the world. It is so big that if all the continents were placed in it, there would still be room left over. The Pacific Ocean stretches from the Bering Strait in the north to Antarctica in the south. It is bordered by North and South America in the east and by Asia and Australia in the west. A number of seas are also part of the Pacific Ocean. They include the Bering Sea, the Sea of Japan, and the Coral Sea.

The ocean floor includes mountains and deep areas called trenches. The Mariana Trench, near Guam, is the deepest-known spot in the world.

The word pacific means “peaceful.” However, the Pacific Ocean is not always peaceful. Its waves and winds have wrecked ships and cities. The Pacific also has hot-water springs caused by hot vents. Hot vents are found where ocean water seeps down through cracks in the ocean bottom. This water is heated by hot volcanic rock beneath the surface and rises up as a hot spring.

Many wonderful foods and natural resources come from the Pacific Ocean. They include seafood, pearls, tropical fish for aquariums, and minerals. Oil is the most important mineral resource of the Pacific.

Pollution is a problem in some parts of the Pacific today. Many industries and cities dump garbage and sewage into its waters. Oil spilled from large ships called tankers or from oil wells kills many sea creatures and plants.
