Sinai Peninsula

Sinai PeninsulaSinai <<SY ny>> Peninsula is part of Egypt. A peninsula is a piece of land almost surrounded by water. The Sinai Peninsula lies east of the Suez Canal and the Gulf of Suez. It borders western Israel. Most of Egypt is in Africa. But the Sinai Peninsula is in southwestern Asia.

The Sinai Peninsula is a dry land with a few small oases  (fertile spots in the desert) . People have lived there for many thousands of years.Egypt gained control over the peninsula in 1906. Israeli troops occupied the Sinai during the 1967 Arab-Israeli war. The Israelis withdrew from the Sinai Peninsula in 1982. Sharm ash Shaykh is a popular resort city on the peninsula’s southern tip.
