Panama City is the capital and largest city of Panama. It lies on the Pacific Ocean, at one end of the Panama Canal.Panama City is a crossroads of world trade.
A historic section of the city lies on a peninsula on the Pacific coast. It has narrow streets and buildings from the late 1600′s. Downtown Panama City includes such buildings as the Palace of Justice, the Presidential Palace, and the Museum of the Panamanian Man. Wealthy people generally live on the edges of the city or in suburbs. Many poor people live in slums in the city.
Most workers have jobs in government or international trade, or with the Panama Canal. Banking and tourism are important economic activities. Other industries include food processing and making clothing.
A Spanish adventurer named Pedro Arias de Ávila founded Panama City in 1519. Pirates led by the Englishman Henry Morgan destroyed the city in 1671. It was rebuilt in 1673. The Panama Canal opened in 1914. It made the city a center for world trade.
