Ottawa has many festivals every year. One of them, held in May, is the Tulip Festival. Millions of tulips bloom in parks, along roads, and around buildings.
In 1826, British soldiers founded the first settlement in the area that is now Ottawa. The settlement became known as Bytown. Ottawa became the capital of the Dominion of Canada in 1867. It remained the capital when Canada gained its independence from the United Kingdom in 1931.
