Monterrey <<mohn tehr RAY>> is one of the largest cities in Mexico. It lies in a fertile valley near the Texas border. The Pan American Highway runs from Laredo, Texas, through Monterrey. A natural gas pipeline also connects the city with Texas.

Monterrey has old Spanish-style buildings and many modern buildings. The city’s chief products are beer and iron and steel. Workers also make clothing materials, cement, and other products.

Spanish settlers founded Monterrey about 1560. Monterrey was incorporated as a city in 1596.
