K2 Mountains

K2K2 is the world’s second highest mountain. Only Mount Everest is higher. K2 is also called Mount Godwin Austen or Dapsang. It is in the Karakoram Range, also called the Mustagh Range, in northern Kashmir in Asia. The peak is 28,250 feet (8,611 meters) high. It is snow-covered and usually hidden in clouds. There are glaciers 30 and 40 miles (48 and 64 kilometers) long on its sides. The mountain originally was named for the Englishman Henry Haversham Godwin Austen. He surveyed  (measured) it in the late 1850′s. He called the mountain K2. It is now known by that name. An Italian expedition reached the top of the mountain for the first time in July 1954. Ardito Desio led this expedition.
