Gettysburg


GettysburgGettysburg <<GEHT eez BUHRG or GEHT ihz BUHRG>> is a community in southern Pennsylvania. It is famous as the site of the Battle of Gettysburg, one of the most important battles of the American Civil War (1861-1865).

Gettysburg’s rich history attracts many tourists each year. The Civil War battlefield, which lies just outside Gettysburg, is now maintained by the National Park Service as the Gettysburg National Military Park and the Gettysburg National Cemetery. Many historical monuments and museums stand in and near Gettysburg. Orchards nearby produce large amounts of apples and peaches. Gettysburg was founded about 1786 by James Gettys, a local tavern owner.
